Catchings Hosts Knoxville Basketball Camp

Tamika Catchings (’00, ’05), Lady Vol basketball and retired WNBA player and four-time Olympic gold medalist, came back to Knoxville to host a free basketball clinic in April in partnership with the UT Health Science Center’s Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology.

Catchings’ ties to the department go back to when she was a student–athlete. Her coach, the late Pat Summitt (’76) insisted she seek the department’s assistance for her hearing loss. Catchings hadn’t worn her hearing aids since third grade, when she threw them into a field. She attributes the skills she acquired in speech therapy to her comfort in speaking to the public.

Note:  Students interested in pursing a degree in Audiology and Speech Pathology may contact the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education.

We are very grateful for Tamika’s generosity. She is truly a wonderful role model. Her message to individuals of all ages is to Dream BIG (Believe – Inspire – Greatness) and she certainly embodies someone who has reached, and continues to reach, BIG goals. Go Tamika!
